We got an update on the Rise of the Beasts movie, which gives us a closer look at his Mirage's design and a taste of his personality. Let's dive in.
First I want to show you this.
And then, let's talk about why fans like me who grew up with the original series (G1) always compare new designs to the old ones.
When you're a fan of a show, it's only natural to form a strong emotional connection to its characters. They become like family, and their appearance and personalities become ingrained in our memories.
This blurs the line between reality and fiction. It's the same reason why people go crazy when they see Harrison Ford on the street. Even though they know he's not really Han Solo, seeing him brings back memories and evokes the same feeling as if they were meeting the real Han Solo from 1977. It's all psychological, and we can't help but feel this way.
For G1 fans we hoped that seeing Rise of the Beasts Mirage would bring back memories of our childhood but the choices made by the creators leave us feeling disappointed. Like imagine if you paid for a Han Solo autograph event and Alden Ehrenreich showed up instead of Harrison Ford. G1 fans want to embrace the new Rise of the Beasts Mirage just as much as we did the original Mirage. So to help us do that let me help us part ways with our memories of the original G1 Mirage by taking us through the five stages of grief.
At first, there's denial. We might say, "That's not Mirage, he doesn't look or sound like the Mirage we know."
Next comes anger, as we wonder why they would call the character Mirage if he doesn't resemble the original character. It's a frustrating situation, like what happened with Blitzwing. Bumblebee Movie Blitzwing looks like Starscream, why is he called Blitzwing? Rise of the Beasts Mirage looks like Jazz, why is he called Mirage?
Next comes bargaining as we imagine "what if" scenarios and attempt to regain control. What if Rise of the Beasts Mirage resembled the Mirage that
I've known, that we've known since 1984.
The defining features for his head
the tapering white front wing from the F1 formula race car
the blue on the sides of his arms
heavy calves ankles and feet
And so we sit back and feel a false sense of having regained control. Self-delusion at its finest. And that's where we are now. Will I reach the fourth or fifth stage of grief with Rise of the Beasts Mirage? I don't know yet.
For Alden Ehrenreich in the Solo movie, I gave the movie a chance. I was able to accept Alden as Solo despite how different he was. So let's see how the new Mirage fares with audiences and I hope it will be well received.
